PHARR, TX — The Texas Comptroller’s Office announced Monday that it has seized the Crunch Fitness at 500 N Jackson Road after finally completing the most brutal workout regimen in state history: a six-year drop set of audits, liens, and patience, ending with $398,133.76 in unpaid sales tax crushed out of existence.
“We don’t judge,” said a fictional Comptroller spokesperson, flexing a clipboard. “We just incrementally increase the resistance until the debt reaches muscle failure.”
Witnesses said the state’s final set began Friday, when Texas DPS troopers rolled up to the Pharr Town Ctr location like it was leg day and nobody had skipped it since September 2019. Officers taped a seizure notice to the glass, padlocked the doors, and began a state-mandated cooldown that involved counting every treadmill, dumbbell, and abandoned water bottle “and all contents therein.”

Members arriving for the gym’s famously advertised 4 a.m. open were greeted by the state’s newest fitness accessory: a foreclosure-grade master lock. Several reportedly tried scanning in anyway, assuming their $9.99 membership had simply gone up ninety-nine cents.
“Honestly I thought this was a new obstacle,” said one fictional Pharr man, attempting to climb the shuttered entrance like a rope wall. “The state really said no judgments — just no entrance.”
According to a fictional audit summary, the gym had skipped payments across three grueling intervals: 2019 through 2023, then 2023 through 2025, then one final September 2025 burnout that Austin interpreted as “asking for one more rep.” A Hidalgo County lien, filed in October 2025, served as the state’s spotter.

The Comptroller’s fictional spokesperson insisted the seizure was a collaborative gain. “We tried to work out a payment plan,” he said, stretching. “They chose to skip leg day, arm day, and every day. Now the state owns the gains.”
By Monday, the seized facility had been renamed in members’ group chats as “Crunch Fitness Museum of Jackson Road,” featuring a permanent exhibit titled “Cardio You Owe.” The state’s inventory team declined comment but was reportedly seen doing laps around the parking lot with a barcode scanner.
“At the end of the day,” the spokesperson said, wiping down the seizure notice like a bench, “fitness is about consistency. So is delinquent tax collection. Guess who showed up six years straight?”
