BROWNSVILLE — City officials confirmed Tuesday that Brownsville has unlocked 18 million gallons of daily water capacity after a SpaceX representative signed a single document at the Sept. 22 City Commission meeting, an achievement locals noted took roughly forty seconds versus the 19 years residents have spent asking for basic pressure upgrades on the West Side.
The two projects — a BPUB potable reuse project adding 8 million gallons per day and a Southmost Regional Water Authority expansion adding 10 million — reportedly sat in a filing cabinet labeled ‘SOMEDAY’ until someone attached up to $220 million in SpaceX-linked funding, at which point the cabinet opened by itself and the agenda items moved so fast one commissioner’s vote arrived before he raised his hand.
‘We Signed It in Pen, That’s How Confident We Were’
‘Normally we study water projects for a decade, form a subcommittee, lose the subcommittee, and reform it with worse people,’ said a city utilities official, wiping away tears. ‘This time the item was moved, seconded, approved, and laminated before the PowerPoint finished loading.’ Officials confirmed that engineers simply turned the existing water plan upside down and shook it until the capacity came out.
Longtime residents expressed mild disbelief. ‘My street has been on a boil-water notice since the Cochran era,’ said one man waiting outside a Brownsville hardware store. ‘I guess I should’ve incorporated as a rocket company.’ City staff have already printed new forms that say ‘WATER REQUEST (SPACEX Y/N?)’ at the top, and the Y box is slightly larger and pre-checked.
Other Projects Asked to Also Get a Signature, Told to Form a Line
A BPUB spokesperson clarified that the mechanism is not favoritism but ‘physics.’ ‘Water naturally flows toward signatures from companies that land rockets near Boca Chica,’ she said. ‘It’s science. You can’t argue with hydrology.’ She added that the potable reuse component means Brownsvillle residents can now drink the same water twice, ‘a luxury previously reserved for those with two cups.’
At press time, a citizens’ petition asking for a fire hydrant on Palm Boulevard had been assigned a case number, a color-coded folder, and a projected review date of 2047, though officials stressed it could be expedited if the hydrant were rebranded as a launch-adjacent cooling station.
