SATIRE: This is parody. Not a real news report.

EDINBURG — Flanked by a sand trap and a banner reading “NOW HIRING (DRIVING) RANGE,” city officials broke ground Tuesday on a $7.2 million, two-story facility at Ebony Hills Golf Course that will place golf operations on the first floor and a full workforce resource center on the second — finally answering the question Valley job seekers have quietly asked for decades: where can I work on my follow-through?

“A résumé gets you to the first tee,” said a city economic development director, wedging a tee into the ground with a laminated cover letter. “The interview is the swing. And we have all watched a man with a gorgeous backswing collapse the follow-through and put it in the water. In Edinburg, that water hazard is named ‘So, walk me through the fourteen-month gap.'”

You Can’t Rush a Swing, and You Can’t Rush an Answer About 2021

Beginning in summer 2027, the second floor will offer job skills training, résumé help, and community classes in partnership with South Texas College, UTRGV, and Zoho Corporation, including “Explaining Employment Gaps With a Quiet Lower Body,” “Salary Negotiation While Lagging a Putt,” and “Bunker Recovery: Both Kinds.” Instructors will be golf professionals cross-trained in human resources, a combination officials describe as “the most dangerous hire in Hidalgo County.”

“We film everything,” said the facility’s director of swing-and-answer coaching. “Head stays down. Wrists stay quiet. You say ‘contract ended, and I used that window to get forklift certified’ without your voice cracking, and then you finish the stroke. Do not peek at the ball. Do not peek at the hiring manager. Hold the pose until the ball stops rolling or the recruiter stops writing.”

Early participants are already converts. “I explained a fourteen-month gap, kept my left arm dead straight, and striped it 240,” said a 34-year-old applicant who asked to be identified only as “currently between fairways.” “The Zoho rep clapped. Nobody has ever clapped at a mock interview.”

Automated Irrigation, Automated Rejection

The city is simultaneously installing automated irrigation across the course, a system officials say will run on the exact schedule of the automated rejection emails, “so nothing greens up without something drying out.” Golf operations will continue through an auxiliary facility during construction, meaning that for the next two years Edinburg residents can practice maintaining a smooth swing under pressure inside a trailer, which several economists agree is the most realistic interview simulation available anywhere in America.

“By summer 2027, no one in this city will bail on an answer early,” the director said, watching a sprinkler arc over a fresh stack of résumés. “They will finish the stroke. They will hold the pose. Then, and only then, will they be walked out.”
