HARLINGEN — City officials confirmed Tuesday that Harlingen’s status as the only Texas city to win the 2026 All-America City award will be validated the only way civic excellence can be truly measured: by distributing processed meat cylinders, shaved ice, and forcing residents into a fog-filled inflatable arena to shoot infrared beams at each other in the name of democracy.

The celebration, scheduled Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. at Lozano Plaza on Jackson Avenue, will feature free hot dogs, snow cones, and merchandise “while supplies last” — a phrase city planners confirmed is “the official motto of American freedom.” A DJ will provide the soundtrack for what one parks official called “the most aggressive civic engagement exercise in Valley history.”

“We won this award because of our people,” said a city spokesperson wearing a lanyard that read ‘DENVER OR BUST: WE WENT AND WE WON.’ “And now we will prove our people are engaged by having them dive behind inflatable barriers and tag each other with lasers. That is what Thomas Jefferson would have wanted. He loved laser tag. Look it up.”

Other Texas Cities Remain Trapped in Almost-America Status

Sources confirmed that every other city in Texas now exists in a bureaucratic gray zone known as “Almost-America,” where residents must pay full price for snow cones and no one is required to do laser tag at all. Officials in several Almost-America municipalities reportedly spent the weekend staring out windows and wondering where they went wrong.

“We thought we were doing fine,” said a fictional city manager from a town that did not win. “But then Harlingen rolled out the DJ and the merchandise table and the laser tag, and honestly, we just didn’t have the infrared infrastructure.”

Harlingen leaders accepted the award in Denver on June 28 after a rigorous national competition focused on civic engagement and civic trust — two things that the August heat index of Lozano Plaza will test in real time.

Snow Cones Melting Faster Than Civic Trust

Several residents noted that the snow cones, distributed in 98-degree evening heat, would serve as a powerful metaphor for institutional confidence.

“My cherry snow cone was already soup before I got back to my truck,” said one attendee at a dry run for the event. “But that soup tasted like All-America. You can’t put a price on that. Well, you can — it’s free while supplies last.”

City officials urged residents to arrive early, noting that the laser tag arena has a strict capacity and that anyone who refuses to participate will be sent to neighboring San Benito, which is reportedly still just Regular America.
