South Texas College has embarked on a transformative journey with the groundbreaking of its $7.7 million Kinesiology & Wellness Center, poised to revolutionize access to health and science education at the Pecan Campus. This cutting-edge facility will boost classroom capacity and support key programs in exercise sciences, promising to elevate educational opportunities in the Rio Grande Valley. Dive into how this milestone reflects STC’s unwavering commitment to shaping future leaders in STEM fields.

STC Breaks Ground on $7.7 Million Kinesiology & Wellness Center

South Texas College (STC) recently marked a significant milestone by breaking ground on a state-of-the-art Kinesiology & Wellness Center at its Pecan Campus. This major development is designed to expand health and science opportunities for students, underscoring the institution’s commitment to nurturing the next generation of leaders in these vital fields.

A Vision Realized

Spanning 16,715 square feet, the new facility comes with a construction cost of $7.7 million, exceeding early budget estimates of $5 million, reflecting the growing scale and importance of the project. Dr. Anahid Petrosian, Vice President and Provost for Academic Affairs & Economic Development, expressed jubilation at this development. “This is the day that our Kinesiology and Wellness program has waited for many years,” she declared. “This dream has been possible thanks to Dr. Solis’ vision, and now it’s coming to fruition.”

Dr. Ricardo J. Solis, the President of STC, emphasized the dual role of the new facility. It will serve not only as an exercise sciences hub but also as a wellness education center, critical for students exploring pathways in STEM fields. “It provides a chance for students who are unsure of their field of study to gain confidence and thrive in the sciences, especially in STEM,” Dr. Solis explained.

Expanding Educational Horizons

Once completed, the center will drastically enhance classroom capacity—from one classroom to four—and support three essential program tracks: coaching and education, exercise science, and personal training certification. Dr. Eric Reittinger, Dean of Social & Behavioral Sciences, acknowledged the 15-year vision behind the project. “It’s a facility long in the making. It started with a modest $5 million budget, but as its significance grew, so did our investment in it,” he noted.

A Collaborative Effort

The realization of this project required cooperation and dedication from multiple stakeholders. Board of Trustees Chair, Dr. Alejo Salinas Jr., remarked on the importance of such a facility for a comprehensive educational environment. “A college is incomplete without a physical education facility, and this year, we are obtaining just that,” he said. He also took pride in STC’s national recognition as the top community college serving Hispanics, calling it “a tremendous honor for all of us.”

Additionally, Mary G. Del Paz, Vice President for Finance, highlighted the collective effort of STC’s facilities team and external partners, including architects Bob Boltinghouse and John Gates and Tri Construction contractors. “Their vision and craftsmanship have ensured that the center will not only support academic excellence but also enhance overall wellness,” she said.

Impact on the Rio Grande Valley

The establishment of the Kinesiology & Wellness Center represents a substantial development for the Rio Grande Valley. By equipping students with the tools necessary to excel in health and wellness fields, the center promises to elevate the educational standards in a region that has been historically underserved. Texas State Representative Terry Canales recognized the transformative potential of this investment. “Expanding higher education is key to advancing our community. Education turns a mirror into a window, reflecting the possibilities and opportunities for the Valley’s residents,” Canales stated.

Future Opportunities

In line with STC’s strategic vision for expansion, Dr. Solis announced upcoming partnerships, including discussions with SpaceX recruiters, highlighting the college’s adaptability and alignment with industry demands. “Our programs’ 98 to 100 percent pass rates in health-related certification exams underline the quality of our academic offerings, and the Kinesiology & Wellness Center will undoubtedly enhance this success,” Solis added.

Looking Ahead

As the Rio Grande Valley continues to evolve, developments like the Kinesiology & Wellness Center are crucial. They symbolically and practically underline the region’s commitment to education, health, and community well-being. As Dr. Salinas affirmed, “This is what South Texas College is all about: supporting students and ensuring success.” Valley residents stand to benefit immensely from this investment, setting a new precedent for educational growth and community development in the area.

This story of progress and investment, emblematic of broader efforts to promote health and educational advancement in the Rio Grande Valley, signifies the commitment of local institutions to fostering a brighter, more promising future for all community members.
