One Student’s Journey of Love, Sacrifice, and Leadership: A Rio Grande Valley Story

In the heart of the Rio Grande Valley, where cultural richness meets the trials of daily life, the story of Brian Tello emerges. This remarkable tale of resilience and devotion is not just an individual triumph; it is a narrative that fills the community with hope, demonstrating the power of perseverance and the value of family.

The Beginning of a Challenging Journey

Brian Tello’s journey to obtaining an Associate of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies from South Texas College (STC) is a testament to love and sacrifice. Four months before starting college, Tello was completing his service in the U.S. Navy stationed in Japan when his life took an unexpected turn. His father suffered a severe hemorrhagic stroke, leaving him non-verbal and fully dependent on care.

Recalling that time, Tello said, “I got the news about my father while I was serving out of the country. I was in the middle of being discharged, moving back home and at the same time needed to get documents together regarding my father’s care.” At just 22 years old, and as the eldest of six siblings, Tello assumed the role of caregiver and head of the family while striving to achieve his academic dreams.

Assuming Leadership and Responsibility

Upon returning home to South Texas, Brian Tello became the backbone of his family. He took on responsibilities, including guiding his siblings in their schooling and managing household duties previously shouldered by his father. He says, “I would help feed him, change him, move him around. We all would. I also needed to help with the things he used to handle such as bills, fixing things and guiding my family.”

Despite these enormous responsibilities, Tello never relinquished his academic aspirations. Inspired by his father’s unwavering support for education, he pursued a degree to honor his father’s dreams and pave the way for his siblings. “Graduating means everything to me because I did it not just for myself, but for him and for my siblings. I want them to know they can achieve anything, no matter what life throws at them,” Tello explains.

Community and Family Support

On graduation day, Tello’s journey resonated deeply within the Valley community. Among those witnessing his achievement, his father, though bound to a gurney, was present in spirit and pride. Linda Tello, Tello’s stepmother, shares, “He can’t speak, but when we asked him if he wanted to go to the graduation, he smiled. Before his stroke, he would always try and be there for anything school related the kids had going on and always encouraged them to do their best. We knew this meant everything to him. He’s proud of Brian. We all are.”

The Valley’s tight-knit community offers not just a backdrop, but an ecosystem of support where stories of personal triumph are shared and celebrated. Local initiatives and educational programs bolster young people like Tello, who draw strength from their families and community.
