Capable Kids: Fostering Inclusion through Sports and Activities in the Rio Grande Valley
In the heart of the Rio Grande Valley (RGV), Capable Kids, a non-profit organization dedicated to inclusivity, celebrates its 10th anniversary. By offering diverse sports and social programs, Capable Kids is transforming the lives of children with disabilities, ensuring they too can engage in activities that celebrate their unique strengths and foster a sense of community belonging.
Promoting Empowerment and Inclusion
With a mission to bridge the gap in available resources for children with disabilities, Capable Kids has been unwavering in its mission. Ivanna Saenz, the Lead Program Specialist, explains the organization’s aim succinctly: “In the RGV, we are very limited with resources, and we just need to bridge that gap.”
To achieve this, Capable Kids has established several core programs, including CK Sports, CK Social, and CK Impact, designed to raise awareness and provide inclusive opportunities. “These programs give us the ability to raise awareness for the lack of sports and social opportunities that our members have within the Rio Grande Valley,” Saenz notes.
At the Hidalgo County Precinct 2 Indoor Sports Complex, members can participate in a myriad of activities, from surf clinics to working out. “Any sport you can think of, we have it. This past summer, we had a surf clinic. We have CK Fitness where the kids come and they utilize the machines to work out. We have baseball, basketball, and we even have a full cheer squad which sometimes performs at the Vipers,” Saenz enthusiastically shares.
Enhancing Local Impact through Specialized Programs
Specialized equipment ensures that every child has the chance to participate. In sports like baseball, softer baseballs and lighter bats are used, while in soccer, large inflatable soccer balls are employed, making it easy for children in wheelchairs to join in. By adapting equipment, Capable Kids ensures that the joy of sports and physical activities is accessible to all kids, regardless of their physical challenges.
Designed with inclusion at its core, Capable Kids also organizes weekly activities for members to connect and celebrate their uniqueness. Saenz passionately describes these efforts, illustrating how Capable Kids cultivates a nurturing environment where children can thrive: “With sports such as baseball, having softer baseballs, having lighter bats, anything with soccer, having big inflatable soccer balls so that our members in wheelchairs can also use.”
A Decade of Advocacy and Support
As Capable Kids marks a decade of commitment to inclusivity, their impact on the RGV community is clear. Parents witness firsthand the difference these programs make, offering a place of joy and empowerment for children with disabilities. In this celebratory year, the organization reflects on its achievements while emphasizing the importance of community advocacy and awareness.
“At Capable Kids, autism isn’t a disability. It’s a superpower,” Saenz says, pointing to the organization’s philosophy of empowering children to embrace their differences. The mission extends beyond the programs themselves, urging the community to engage, learn, and advocate for inclusion actively.
Bridging Past Efforts with Future Goals
The efforts of Capable Kids resonate deeply with ongoing RGV news emphasizing community interest and local impact. Such initiatives highlight the broader narrative of growth and support within South Texas, a region where diversity and inclusivity are steadily championed.
As the organization looks ahead, the potential for expansion is clear. By continuously adapting and innovating, Capable Kids stands as an inspiration in the Valley, setting a benchmark for inclusive practices in sports and social activities.
Future Prospects and Community Engagement
Capable Kids’ contributions have broader implications for the RGV community. By providing inclusive recreational opportunities, they not only enhance the quality of life for children with disabilities but also foster a culture of acceptance and understanding.
Future challenges include securing ongoing funding and expanding outreach to ensure that all corners of the Valley are served. However, with a strong foundation and a decade of success, Capable Kids is well-positioned to continue its transformative work.
