STC Sets Foundation for Weslaco Police Officer’s Lifelong Dedication to Service
In the heart of Weslaco, Texas, Roberto Rodriguez, a third-generation police officer, carries on a family legacy of law enforcement while paving new paths of community service. His journey, enriched by experiences at South Texas College (STC), has equipped him with the tools to serve the Rio Grande Valley (RGV) in innovative and compassionate ways.
A Legacy in Law Enforcement
Born and raised in Weslaco, Rodriguez followed in the footsteps of his father and grandfather, both of whom served as police officers. But it was at STC where his commitment to public service truly took shape. “I come from a family with a long history in law enforcement. It’s in my blood to serve and protect,” Rodriguez explained. He credits his time at STC with instilling important values of empathy, community involvement, and civic responsibility, all crucial in his daily duties as a police officer.
Building a Foundation at STC
After graduating from Weslaco High School in 2011, Rodriguez initially enrolled in STC with an interest in healthcare. However, his true calling became evident through the Criminal Justice program. Immersed in various student organizations, including the Student Leadership Academy, Rodriguez laid the foundational stones for a successful career. His role as a work-study employee in the Student Activities department further deepened his involvement with the campus community.
“Being a work-study student was key to achieving my goals. The flexibility with my schedule allowed me to work and still succeed,” Rodriguez shared. His time at STC, characterized by a blend of academic pursuits and community engagement, prepared him for the complex world of law enforcement.
Returning to Serve Weslaco
In 2014, Rodriguez graduated with associate degrees in Criminal Justice and Interdisciplinary Studies from STC, just before attending a police academy. His journey included roles with both the Mission Police Department and the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office. However, his heart remained in Weslaco. “From there, I had the opportunity to work with both the Mission Police Department and the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office, but I knew in my heart I would always come back to Weslaco,” he stated.
Last year, Rodriguez began serving as Officer Shayne’s K-9 handler. Shayne, Weslaco’s beloved therapy dog, works with Rodriguez to provide emotional support across the RGV, highlighting the department’s commitment to mental health awareness. “Shayne is very special. He’s trained to recognize cortisol, the stress hormone and provide a comforting presence. As human beings, we feel that, and it truly makes our day better,” Rodriguez elaborated on their partnership’s impact.
Addressing Mental Health in the RGV
The presence of therapy dogs like Shayne signifies a growing recognition of the importance of mental health in the community. Rodriguez’s role underscores efforts within the RGV law enforcement to adapt to these needs. By integrating therapy dogs into their work, police departments foster a supportive environment for officers and the public alike. “I’m fortunate to have the best job with him. With the growing awareness of mental health, we understand the vital role emotional support K-9s play in the community, and Shayne is an invaluable member of our agency,” Rodriguez said.
Future Aspirations and Community Impact
Having recently graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from Texas A&M University, Rodriguez aims to further his education with a master’s degree. Inspired by his young daughter, he hopes to lead by example and encourage others to pursue law enforcement careers.
“I remember being a student at North Bridge Elementary, seeing officers in uniform and dreaming of joining them one day,” Rodriguez reminisced. He now visits schools, hoping to inspire the next generation of Valley residents. “Living here, being born here, and seeing the people I grew up with, I know I’m here to protect them. It’s something that truly touches my heart.”
The Broader Impact and Community Involvement
Rodriguez’s story exemplifies the broader impact of community-focused education at STC. His journey highlights a fusion of academic preparation and real-world application, which is crucial for stakeholders in the RGV. Involving alumni in law enforcement roles addresses current societal challenges while promoting the values of empathy and community engagement.
